DIY Home Gym Storage

My DIY Home Gym Storage Project!

This project has probably been one of my favorites in our new house because I LOVE that it’s all my own. I run my own at-home fitness business, Goals & Grace, so we knew when we found a house that I would need a space where I could workout and have it be all my own.

This space came SUCH a long way in just a matter of weeks, but I want to highlight was my DIY Peg-Board Storage space! I have gotten SO many questions about my home gym and my peg board since making it, so I wanted to go ahead and put it all in one place for you in case you wanted to create your own and didn’t know where to start!

Being that my home gym shares a room with my husband Ryan’s office, I wanted everything I had to be both cute AND functional in the small space I had for me. And after scouring Pinterest, decided that I would use pegboards to create my own storage space on the wall.

Materials I used:

*1 large Peg BoardI had them cut into 4 equal 24″ x 48″ pieces at Home Depot.

*2 Peg Hook Kits– this includes hooks to hang things on AND the pieces you need to mount your peg board! So get as many as you have individual peg boards so you aren’t short them when it comes time to mount them!

*1  1x2x8 piece of wood cut into smaller pieces – I did 1 4 foot piece to run along the top of my boards, and 2 2 feet pieces.

*2 Long hook kitsI used these to hold my bands / foam roller / and the shelves.

*Mesh Baskets or Wire Baskets – I used wire baskets and spray painted these pink, but you could do whatever color you want!

*8 oz wood stain of your choice! – I love the Varathane brand & color : Jacobean!

*Polyurethane Coating to seal/protect the wood

*Paint Brushes / Sponges to apply stain & protectant

*Ikea TV Stand – I used this for extra storage underneath my peg boards

And finally – make it your own by adding your own decor and home gym equipment! 🙂

Put it together!

When we started this project, we decided that pegboards were going to be a simple & functional way to spice up this space! Once you purchase the peg hook kits – you have everything you need to hang the boards. I went with hanging them horizontally because of how they best fit on our wall but that’s up to you and your space!

We made the mistake of NOT realizing that to mount your peg boards – you need special peg mounts in order to have it be far enough off the wall in order for all your hooks to work! The kit I linked comes with them, which we later found out, lol so just be sure to buy as many of the kits as you have boards because you will need to mount it into all 4 corners. We used a stud finder to mount the boards to studs in our wall.

After getting your boards mounted, I then just played around with the placement of the wood boards. The 1×2 pieces of wood are great because they are super lightweight and just rested on the long hooks I purchased. I stained them, let them dry, and then sealed them with polyurethane. I only did 1 coat, and didn’t remove the stain too much from the wood to give it a darker look and feel to contrast the white board!

After staining the wood, I took on spray painting the baskets. You can use any spray paint color- I clearly love pink lol and went with some pink spray paint I had on hand! I think I did a few coats of spray paint over the baskets since they were black! Once all the pieces are done, it’s just a matter of decorating your space to your taste!

Decorate your space!

My favorite part!! I actually just used the long peg hooks to display my workout equipment on my board wall.

Here is some equipment you could display to make your storage wall come together!
